Robert Hansen Part 2: Twenty-Four Crosses

What happens when a serial killer stops hunting animals and starts hunting people?

In Part 2 of Torture: A Dark History, Kevin Young and Dan Hourigan continue the horrifying story of Robert Hansen, the “Butcher Baker.” This is where Hansen’s crimes become truly monstrous. Women are kidnapped, taken into the Alaskan wilderness, stripped naked, and (according to Hansen’s own account) given a head start before he hunted them down like prey.

We follow the murders of Sue Luna, Robin Pelkey, DeLynn Frey, Paula Goulding, Malai Larsen, Teresa Watson, Angela Feddern, Tamera Pederson, and others before arriving at the case that finally brought Hansen down: 17-year-old Cindy Paulson, the woman who got away.

Cindy’s escape gave investigators their first real look inside Hansen’s world. Her description of his house, basement, plane, car, and weapons helped crack open a case that police had repeatedly failed to take seriously. Then investigators found Hansen’s aviation map—with crosses marking locations across the Alaskan wilderness—and suddenly all those missing women started looking like pieces of the same horrifying puzzle.

And naturally, Kevin and Dan have questions. Like why the hell did Hansen think a fake mustache was going to fool anybody? Why did multiple people lie for this absolute sh*tbag? And how many red flags does it take before someone finally thinks, “Maybe we should investigate the creepy hunter with the kidnapping record”?

The jokes get darker because the story does. This is the story of Robert Hansen, the women he hunted, and the survivor who finally brought him down.
