What happens when the jungle itself seems determined to kill you?

In this episode of Torture: A Dark History, Kevin Young and Dan Hourigan are doing something a little different. Instead of focusing on one person, one torture device, or one historical event, we're counting down 15 of the most terrifying, painful, ingenious, and deadly booby traps used during the Vietnam War.

We'll take a very quick trip through the history of the war before getting straight into the traps. From the dense jungles and muddy trails to bridges, tunnels, villages, camps, and even seemingly harmless objects, the Viet Cong turned the environment around them into a massive weapons system.

We'll encounter hornet traps, collapsing bridges, booby trapped flags and supplies, snake traps, bamboo whips, grenade traps, swinging maces, and, of course, the infamous punji sticks.

Some of these traps were designed to kill. Others were designed to maim, slow down patrols, force soldiers to stop and evacuate the wounded, or simply make every step through the jungle feel like it could be your last.

We'll look at how these relatively simple devices allowed a much less technologically equipped enemy to exploit the jungle, surprise American troops, and turn ordinary objects into weapons. And yes, there's plenty of blood, spikes, explosives, venomous snakes, poisoned stakes, and generally terrible ways to ruin someone's day.

And because this is Torture: A Dark History, Kevin and Dan bring their particularly inappropriate sense of humor to a subject where even the jungle seems to have it out for you.
